Poppies are erroneous, symbols of contradiction. Beautiful, seductive. They appear each year on ANZAC Day, Australia and New Zealand's national day of remembrance, as emblems of sacrifice and heroism. Yet they are also inextricably tied to the Opium Wars, through which the poppy became an instrument of China's “century of humiliation.” I have tried to reconcile the cognitive dissonance of wearing the poppy and the conflicting role it plays in China and New Zealand’s nation-founding mythologies.
